Terms and Conditions of Hire

Please read these terms and conditions thoroughly, you may contact us with any questions or for further information.

1. These terms and conditions will govern the hire of a boat by you the “customer” and us “Gloucester Boat Hire Ltd”.

2. Contact
i. We are Gloucester Boat Hire Ltd, registered company number 13534530.
ii. You should contact us via email ( or via telephone (07762741972).

3. Interpretation & Definitions
i. Us/We-Gloucester Boat Hire Ltd
ii. You- The customer
iii. Hire Base- The location where the boats are collected and returned.
iv. The Contract- You’re booking with us, whether made in advance online, over the phone or in person.
v. CRT- The Canal and River Trust

4. The Contract
i. The contract commences once payment has been received and your order has been confirmed by us.
ii. The contract ends when the hire boat has been returned to the hire base, all crew have departed the boat, and any additional charges have been paid.
iii. When contacting us regarding your order, you must provide your name as well as the booking date and time.

5. Location
i. The pickup and return of the boat is always at the hire base (Barge Arm, Gloucester Docks, Gloucester, GL1 2DN)
ii. The boat is not permitted to travel through any locks or onto any rivers, it must remain on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal at all times.
iii. The boat must remain in the water, they must not be lifted or pulled out of the water under any circumstances.
iv. The boat must never be left unattended.

6. Safety
Safety on the water is of paramount importance to prevent injury, drowning, damage, or illness. Safety information and operating instruction are stipulated in writing below and on the boat handover form, you will also be given a full briefing in person. Copies of key information are stored in the boat locker. Failing to act in a safe manner or reckless behaviour, as outlined in this section, will result in immediate termination of your hire without refund, further charges may be made for any damage caused in line with section 7.

i. We will provide a full safety and boat operation handover at the start of your hire, should we assess that you are not willing or able to operate the boat in a safe manner, we may terminate or delay your hire with no refund.
ii. Lifejackets must be worn by all crew, we will provide you with these.
iii. You must follow instructions given by us, including that contained within the boat handover.
iv. You must abide by all relevant signs and notices present on the waterway.
v. You must follow instruction given by any waterway officials.
vi. The boat must be securely tied to a suitable mooring point before any passengers are allowed to board or disembark.
vii. Always give way to other waterway users.
viii. All body parts and possessions must remain within the confines of the boat, you must not touch the water or lean out of the boat when underway.
ix. You must give way to other waterways users
x. Racing of the boat is prohibited.
xi. Ramming, crashing, intentional grounding, or other dangerous manoeuvring is prohibited.
xii. We hold no insurance and accept no liability for dogs onboard. These are carried at your own risk and at our discretion.
xiii. We hold no insurance for fishing, or any other activities not described within the terms and conditions.

i. Payments for advance bookings (online, telephone, or in person) must be paid for using credit/debit card at the time of booking.
ii. Payments for bookings made on the day (telephone, or in person) must be paid for at the time of booking using credit/debit card.

8. Additional Charges
i. Security Deposit:

 Before departing on the hire boat, you are required to leave a valid form of photo ID (drivers licence, passport, citizen card etc), this must be in your name. We may also require a valid credit or debit card in the same name. By entering into this contract, you agree to pay any of the additional charges as outlined below as determined by us.
ii. Late Return fee:

The precise return time for your boat will be specified by us at the time of your departure. If the boat is not returned by this time, then a late return fee of £30 for every 15-minute period (or part thereof) will be charged. You must call to inform us if you are going to be late, otherwise, you will be liable for any cost we incur in searching for you and the boat.
iii. Cleaning:
Boats are cleaned as standard between each hire. If we determine you to have caused an unreasonable amount of mess (mud, rubbish, etc), you will be charged to reflect the additional cleaning cost and disruption to our service- standard charge is £20.
iv. Accidental damage or loss:
Items damaged or lost will charged at their estimated current repair or replacement value e.g. cushion replacement £30, canopy repair £160, up to a maximum value of £500.
v.Intentional damage or loss or theft:
Items damaged or lost or stolen caused by intentional or reckless behaviour will be charged at their estimated current repair or replacement value.

9. Termination
i. Your rights to end the contract:
Cancellations more than 1 week in advance of the booking can be made by telephone, email, or in person, you will be refunded in full to the original payment method.

Rescheduling less than 1 week in advance can be done by telephone, email, or in person. There is no charge to reschedule up until 48 hours prior to departure.

Rescheduling less than 48 hours in advance can be done at our discretion by telephone, email, or in person. This will incur a 20% rescheduling fee.

You may return the boat early at any point during you hire, however you will not be reimbursed for any time not used.

Our rights to end the contract
i. If payment in full is not received.
ii. If you refuse or are unable to provide your photo ID and any additional card deposit prior stipulated.
iii. If you fail to adhere to the terms and conditions, handover instructions, or rules of the waterway.
iv. If you do not arrive with enough time to complete the boat handover before your hire period is due to conclude.
v. If you ignore any instruction from a member of our team, or waterways staff, especially those relating to safety or boat movement.
vi. If we determine that you are not in a fit state to operate the boat (e.g. through drink/drugs or injury), including any substances consumed during the hire period.
vii. If we end the contract for any of the reasons in 7.1, we will be entitled to keep any money already paid and request further payment in line with section 5 of these terms.

10. Alcohol
i. The driver of the boat must not consume alcohol during the hire period.
ii. For passengers we allow a maximum of 2 beers, half a bottle of wine, 2 canned cocktails or equivalent per person. Neat spirits are not permitted.

11. Incidents, Accidents, Breakdowns
i. In the event of incident, accident, or breakdown, you must call us immediately and await further instruction or rescue. You must not attempt any physical or mechanical repairs without prior instruction.
ii. If the boat is rendered out of action due to circumstances outside of our control (e.g. prop fouling, grounding, crashing), we will not issue any refund or compensation.
iii. If your hire is disrupted due to equipment failure that we could have foreseeably prevented, (e.g. due to running out of battery power during the agreed hire period), you will be given the opportunity to re-schedule the full period free of charge.

12. Your property
i. All personal property taken onto the boat is done so at your own risk. We accept no liability for loss or damage to any personal property.
ii. We make no guarantee to return any of your property left on the boat but will endeavour to do so should any items be discovered.

13. Weather
i. We do not accept late cancellations for reasons related to the weather. It is your responsibility to check the weather forecast and to prepare and dress appropriately.
ii. If in the rare case that weather conditions make hire unsafe (e.g. strong wind, heavy rain, storms, ice), we will contact you at the earliest opportunity and you will be offered a re-scheduling free of charge.

14. Complaints and disputes
i. You must report all complaints and to us, you may do this in writing, by telephone or in person.
ii. We aim to make a formal response, including resolution, to all complaints within 7 days however for complicated issues or during busy periods this may take longer.
iii. If you are not satisfied with the resolution, then you may appeal to us again. Beyond this we may refer the issue to a solicitor to arbitrate between us and you.

15.Our Responsibility for loss or damage suffered by you
i. We are responsible for loss or damaged suffered by you should this be a foreseeable result of us breaking the terms and conditions, acting unlawfully or otherwise with negligence. We cannot be held responsible for loss or damage suffered that was not foreseeable or was caused intentionally by a member of your crew.
ii. We do not limit our liability to you where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death, or injury, or loss caused by our neglect, misrepresentation, or breach of your rights.​
